Responsive Web Design and Media Queries

In a list of most helpful to least helpful, here are the three articles for responsive web pages.

I like to learn in more simple terms. So the intro to css media queries article was better for me. It’s a straight forward approach into explaining how media queries transition website designs for different platforms. I also learned that re-designing the whole css is not necessary. All you need to do is add a couple lines of code and play around with your widths, floats, heights, and margins.

Next helpful was the pros and cons article. This article pointed out that not all websites could find media queries useful for their particle website. One pro is that media queries allow for you to only use one website the con is that it’s technically challenging to keep up with. This article helped me understand that sometimes mobile websites and apps may come in handy for bigger organizations because they have the people to keep up with them, the money to keep up with apps and a bigger audience to provide for.

Coming to the least helpful (but still helpful) is the responsive web design article. The author, Ethan Marcotte, does a good job of explaining the usefulness around media queries. With growing technology, we have all different kinds of screens sizes we look at content on. We also, have no way of knowing what other kinds of devices with emerge in the future. It used to just be a computer screen but now we have iPhones, iPads, tablets, computers, etc. Without responsive design, your website will not come across an iPhone like it can a computer screen. Although, for such a simple concept,  Marcotte doesn’t make it easy to understand. I personally found the article quit long and a bit hard to understand.

I would agree with your ranking of the articles, but I disagree on your reasoning for putting Marcotte in last place. I didn’t think his explanations were too complex– I felt they weren’t complex ENOUGH. The article read like he was trying to find a middle ground between technical speech and layman’s terms, and he wound up satisfying no one.
